“Dear Admissions Committee,
It gives me great pleasure to recommend AL for admission. In over 20 years working as a college counselor at ….. High School, I have never encountered a more generous young man than AL. He has the intellect to succeed at any college in the country, yet it’s his genuine heart which has won all of us over. In fact, there is no other student at our school who is more respected than AL.
As his transcript suggests, AL is part of a small cohort of high achieving students at our school. The competition is quite fierce at …School as students will do almost anything to outrank each other. AL, on the other hand, takes our most challenging classes but he leads with his curiosity rather than strategy. In fact, when the top students in the class all decided to forgo our well-respected (but unweighted) seminar program in order to take another AP class junior year to increase their rank, AL chose to keep it. When I asked him about it, he replied,“Learning without the confines of meeting AP expectations is too precious to me and I can’t imagine my school day without Seminar. I’m just too at peace with myself in Seminar to give it up.” AL is a rare find in a generation which sometimes focuses too much on results rather than true understanding.

While AL’s record is quite impressive, he doesn’t have as many A’s in his academic classes or 5’s on AP exams as others in his class. If you didn’t know AL, one might just assume that he’s not working to his potential or that he doesn’t have the intellectual strength of his classmates. Neither is the case for AL. Those of us on the faculty that know AL’s home life see his transcript as a tremendous accomplishment. AL probably won’t mention it, but his home life is far from perfect. He is being raised by a single mom who suffers from severe mental illness. While his friends have the support of two engaged parents who provide for them, AL must provide for himself and his mom. He works night shifts at the local McDonald’s after school to pay rent and bills. He gets his homework done on breaks and in the wee hours of the morning before heading to school each day. His B’s are a badge of honor because of the circumstances he deals with every single day.

If AL didn’t have to work every night during the school week, his grades would surely be A’s. But then again, he wouldn’t be the “AL” we know and respect if that were the case. There is no one in his class or any class to come through…School who has ever impressed us more. It is important to note that AL hopes to major in Computer Science in college. He took AP Computer Science as a sophomore. Everyone else in the class was a senior. Although he got an 89 for the final, he was the only student to receive a 5 on the AP exam. His computer skills became apparent to all of us when our computer system crashed a week before graduation last year. We initially turned to our AP Computer Science teacher, Mr. Jones, for assistance. When Mr. Jones wasn’t able to determine the problem, he called on AL for help. Within a few hours,AL identified the problem and got our entire system online again to finalize transcripts for graduation. Our principal shed a few tears of joy when he realized who had come to our rescue. In actuality, we all shed a few tears that day when we began to see AL as more than just a resilient soul, but a computer genius who was far more talented than we had ever realized.
I encourage the admissions committee to consider AL’s candidacy on a deep and personal level. AL would never want you to overlook his B’s or his “just-outside-the-top-10%-rank.”Instead, he would want you to see his B’s and his #52 rank for what it means to him in his own words:I know what I face every single day. I know what I can and can’t accomplish given my family responsibilities and job. Those B’s aren’t the next best thing to A’s in my world. They represent me being a good student, a better son, and most of all, a man of my word. If you have any questions about AL, please reach out to me. I would move mountains for AL.There is no one I have ever recommended more highly than AL.”
